Spyro the Dragon se passa em um vasto mundo dominado por dragões e suas cinco poderosas entidades conhecidas como Homeworld, que mantêm a paz entre os reinos. O vilão Gnasty Gnorc, banido pelos dragões Artesãos, busca vingança aprisionando dragões em cristais e roubando tesouros. No entanto, o valente dragão Spyro permanece imune à magia de Gnasty. Os jogadores guiam Spyro em uma missão para resgatar dragões aprisionados, coletar ovos de dragão e tesouros, e construir um exército para confrontar Gnasty. O objetivo final é derrotar Gnasty, restaurar a paz e libertar os dragões capturados.
