Spyro the Dragon spielt in einer weiten Welt, die von Drachen und ihren fünf mächtigen Entitäten, den Homeworlds, dominiert wird, die den Frieden zwischen den Königreichen aufrechterhalten. Der Bösewicht Gnasty Gnorc, von den Artisan-Drachen verbannt, sucht Rache, indem er Drachen in Kristallen gefangen hält und Schätze stiehlt. Der mutige Drache Spyro bleibt jedoch von Gnastys Magie unberührt. Die Spieler führen Spyro auf einer Mission, um gefangene Drachen zu retten, Dracheneier und Schätze zu sammeln und eine Armee zu bilden, um Gnasty zu konfrontieren. Das ultimative Ziel ist es, Gnasty zu besiegen, Frieden wiederherzustellen und die gefangenen Drachen zu befreien.
