Spyro the Dragon se desarrolla en un vasto mundo dominado por dragones y sus cinco poderosas entidades conocidas como Homeworld, que mantienen la paz entre los reinos. El villano Gnasty Gnorc, desterrado por los dragones Artesanos, busca venganza atrapando dragones en cristales y robando tesoros. Sin embargo, el valiente dragón Spyro no se ve afectado por la magia de Gnasty. Los jugadores guían a Spyro en una misión para rescatar dragones encarcelados, recolectar huevos de dragón y tesoros, y construir un ejército para enfrentar a Gnasty. El objetivo final es derrotarlo, restaurar la paz y liberar a los dragones capturados.
