Spyro the Dragon se déroule dans un vaste monde dominé par des dragons et leurs cinq puissantes entités appelées Homeworld, qui maintiennent la paix entre les royaumes. Le méchant Gnasty Gnorc, banni par les dragons Artisans, cherche à se venger en piégeant des dragons dans des cristaux et en volant des trésors. Cependant, le courageux dragon Spyro reste à l'abri de la magie de Gnasty. Les joueurs guident Spyro dans une quête pour sauver les dragons emprisonnés, collecter des œufs de dragon et des trésors, et construire une armée pour affronter Gnasty. L'objectif ultime est de le vaincre, de restaurer la paix et de libérer les dragons capturés.
