Spyro the Dragon è ambientato in un vasto mondo dominato dai draghi e dalle cinque potenti entità conosciute come Homeworld, che mantengono la pace tra i regni. Il villain Gnasty Gnorc, esiliato dai draghi Artigiani, cerca vendetta intrappolando i draghi in cristalli e rubando tesori. Tuttavia, il coraggioso drago Spyro rimane immune alla magia di Gnasty. I giocatori guidano Spyro in una missione per salvare i draghi imprigionati, raccogliere uova di drago e tesori, e costruire un esercito per affrontare Gnasty. L'obiettivo finale è sconfiggere Gnasty, ripristinare la pace e liberare i draghi catturati in varie terre.
