スパイロ・ザ・ドラゴンは、ドラゴンと五つの強力な存在「ホームワールド」が支配する広大な世界を舞台にしています。悪役グナスティ・ノークは、アーティザンドラゴンに追放され、ドラゴンをクリスタルに閉じ込めて宝物を奪おうと復讐を企てます。しかし、勇敢なドラゴン・スパイロはグナスティの魔法に影響されません。プレイヤーはスパイロを導き、囚われたドラゴンを救出し、ドラゴンの卵や宝物を集め、グナスティに立ち向かう軍隊を築きます。最終目標はグナスティを倒し、平和を取り戻し、各地の捕らわれたドラゴンを解放することです。
