Spyro the Dragon terletak di dunia luas yang dikuasai oleh naga dan lima entiti kuat dikenali sebagai Homeworld, yang menjaga keamanan antara kerajaan. Penjahat Gnasty Gnorc, yang diusir oleh naga Artisan, mencari balas dendam dengan menjebak naga dalam kristal dan mencuri harta. Namun, naga berani Spyro tidak terjejas oleh sihir Gnasty. Pemain membimbing Spyro dalam misi untuk menyelamatkan naga yang dipenjara, mengumpul telur naga dan harta, serta membina tentera untuk menghadapi Gnasty. Matlamat akhirnya adalah untuk mengalahkan Gnasty, mengembalikan keamanan, dan membebaskan naga yang ditangkap di pelbagai tanah.
