Spyro the Dragon rozgrywa się w rozległym świecie zdominowanym przez smoki i pięć potężnych bytów znanych jako Homeworld, które utrzymują pokój w królestwach. Zły Gnasty Gnorc, wygnany przez smoki Artystów, pragnie zemsty, uwięziając smoki w kryształach i kradnąc skarby. Jednak odważny smok Spyro pozostaje niewzruszony na magię Gnasty'ego. Gracze prowadzą Spyro w misji ratowania uwięzionych smoków, zbierania jaj smoków i skarbów oraz budowania armii do konfrontacji z Gnasty'm. Ostatecznym celem jest pokonanie Gnasty'ego, przywrócenie pokoju i uwolnienie uwięzionych smoków w różnych krainach.
