Spyro the Dragon разворачивается в обширном мире, где правят драконы и пять могущественных сущностей, известных как Homeworld, поддерживающих мир между королевствами. Злодей Гнасти Гнорк, изгнанный драконами-ремесленниками, мстит, запирая драконов в кристаллах и воруя сокровища. Однако смелый дракон Спайро не поддается магии Гнасти. Игроки ведут Спайро в путешествии, чтобы спасти заключенных драконов, собирать яйца драконов и сокровища, а также создать армию для противостояния Гнасти. Главная цель — победить Гнасти, восстановить мир и освободить захваченных драконов в разных землях.
