Spyro the Dragon diễn ra trong một thế giới rộng lớn, nơi bị thống trị bởi những con rồng và năm thực thể mạnh mẽ gọi là Homeworld, duy trì hòa bình giữa các vương quốc. Kẻ ác Gnasty Gnorc, bị các rồng Artisan trục xuất, tìm cách trả thù bằng cách giam giữ rồng trong tinh thể và đánh cắp kho báu. Tuy nhiên, rồng dũng cảm Spyro không bị ảnh hưởng bởi ma thuật của Gnasty.
