Spyro the Dragon, ejderhaların ve krallıklar arasındaki barışı sağlayan beş güçlü varlık olan Homeworld tarafından hakim olunan geniş bir dünyada geçmektedir. Sanatçı ejderhalar tarafından sürgün edilen kötü karakter Gnasty Gnorc, intikam almak için ejderhaları kristallere hapseder ve hazineleri çalar. Ancak cesur ejderha Spyro, Gnasty'nin büyüsünden etkilenmez. Oyuncular, Spyro'yu hapsedilen ejderhaları kurtarma, ejderha yumurtaları ve hazine toplama, Gnasty ile yüzleşmek için bir ordu kurma görevinde yönlendirir. Nihai hedef, Gnasty'yi yenmek, barışı sağlamak ve çeşitli diyarlar boyunca yakalanan ejderhaları özgür bırakmaktır.
